2003 Pingyao International Photography Festival
Under the theme of “Life & Culture,” the 2003 Pingyao International Photography Festival was held in Pingyao, Shanxi, China on September 16-22, 2003. There were over 190 exhibitions of 228 photographers from 17 countries and regions. More than 60,000 guests at home and abroad attended the opening ceremony. The 2003 PIP received viewers of above 100,000 person-times. And forums on Chinese architecture, landscape, portrait and documentary photography were held for the first time. The founding of Pingyao International Photography Museum had ended the history without any museum of photography in China. The array of activities manifested its international aura at the PIP. Statues were erected for Chinese photojournalism pioneers Mr. Sha Fei and Mr. Wu Yinxian whose works were exhibited and housed. 34 agreements on photo transaction had been reached among photographers and photo agencies.
At the 2003 PIP, a host of photographers were fascinated by some new academic activities on photography at which a number of cutting-edge topics on photography were put forward to make a breakthrough in previous fields of architecture, landscape, portrait and documentary of photography and to make new advances. Famous Chinese photographic theoreticians presided over these activities. In addition, the statues of late noted photographers were sculpted, which made a great impact on the internationally photographic circles.
