Life in Photography
The 13th China Pingyao International Photography Festival Came to a Successful End in 2013
On September 25, 2013, the 13th China Pingyao International Photography Festival (PIP) brought to a successful close. In this golden fall, imbued with the artistic aura, Pingyao, a small city in the middle of Shanxi, has become the Holy Land in the hearts of global photographers. More than 250, 000 viewers partook of the festival in the drizzle. With joint efforts of the Organizing Committee and all photographers, the festival is increasingly becoming the Oscar in the international photography community, a feast of visual arts and a stage for photographers’ carnival.
At the 13th China Pingyao International Photography Festival, Du Jianfeng’s work Scar won the most desired Excellent Photographer Prize of Judging Committee. In addition, the International Photographer Award went to five photographers including Roger Ballen, the Excellent Curator Award went to three curators, such as Alasdair Foster, and ten photographers including Jin Yining earned them the Newly-emerged Photographer Award.
Under the guideline of specialization, internationalization and diversity for years, the PIP festival has changed this year’s operation structure in a more substantive way and promoted its whole operation system thanks to “Two Perfections” and “Two Improvements.”
In 2013, the festival set up 8 sections and 16 units, and attracted curators and photographers from 32 countries and regions. There were 420 exhibitions and 12,000 images, shot by 1,600 photographers. This year’s theme of “life in photography” made a response to the theme of “Returning and Exceeding” in 2012.
Academic exhibition of this edition of the PIP festival would select photography. Chen Xiaobo, Du Xiyun, Lian Zhiping and Na Risong were invited to act as the special curators for the academic exhibition by the Organizing Committee, so they could reveal the current situation of photography and discuss the future of photography from their different points of view of cognition and interpretation.
Twelve international curators from all over the world were invited to attend the PIP Festival. Curated by Alasdair Foster, a famed curator, “the Extraordinary with the Ordinary” was a key international exhibition which consisted of the exhibitions by five leading curators from Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, and Venezuela. Their exhibitions could give us a chance to understand the colorful world in photography and to explore the extraordinary scenes in ordinary life. Besides, Roger Ballen, one of the best contemporary artists, and Drew Gardner, a pioneering photographer of British photographic technique, also exhibited their latest works in Pingyao.
Famous curators and photographers throughout the world have been invited to give lectures in “Open Classes in September” since its inception in 2012. In 2013, seven experts, including Roger Ballen, Robert Pledge, Drew Gardner, and professors Ross Sawyers and Tom Newark from Columbia College in Chicago gave lectures at the Lecture Hall of Diesel Engine Factory. A total of 1500 persons attended lectures there.
The “Homage Exhibition” was first launched in 2011. Each edition of the PIP festival pays homage to one reputable photographer who has made great contribution to Chinese photography. Works by renowned photographers Zhu Xianmin and Gu Di were exhibited at the “Homage Exhibition” in 2011 and 2012. And in 2013, Zhang Zudao, forerunner of Chinese photography, first showcased his valuable images of sociology of 42 years, and won the “Homage Award.”
The PIP festival, lasting seven days, has already rung down the curtain. Just like a regular appointment among photographers each year, the PIP festival can show different life experience and “the life of images & the world of dream” through their constant exchange and creation in Pingayo.
