Artist Bio

Scott A. Woodward calls his photographic style “Choose Your Own Adventure Photography” after the books he used to read as a child.  Literally and creatively, he can go one direction and discover a remarkable photographic opportunity; or he can go another direction and find something entirely different.  It is this serendipity that is the beauty of photography for Scott.

His work features regularly in a variety of international publications, including National Geographic Magazine, GEO Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times.

Scott’s unique and sensitive photographic style has resulted in him being twice honoured by Luerzer's Archive as one of the "200 Best Advertising Photographers Worldwide", and he has been chosen by Nikon as “One of Asia’s Finest Photographers”.  Scott is a Nikon Professional Photographer, a SanDisk Extreme Team Member, a Lowepro Storyteller and a Verbatim Agency Global Assignments Photographer.

Personal statement

Like too many others around the world, my family has been profoundly touched by cancer. I have watched my mother, a two-time breast cancer survivor, persisting through years of nauseating chemotherapy and radiation treatment, her body ravaged by countless surgeries and her psyche deeply effected by the emotional trauma of battling this hostile disease. My mother has endured, scarred yet unbroken. But I have also bore witness as my mother-in-law succumbed to ovarian cancer three years ago after her courageous six-year struggle against this silent killer, leaving behind a devastated husband of 49 years, two splintered daughters and a pair of aching granddaughters. These personal experiences propelled me to engage in ‘How I Live’, a documentary project created in collaboration with filmmakers Michael Rogers and Meghan Shea. They, too, have experienced heartbreak by the death of Meghan’ s younger brother, Matthew, to cancer five years ago. Our project aims to show –in my still and Rogers’ and Shea’ s moving images –a collection of stories of children who live with cancer, the relatives who love them, and the doctors and nurses who care for them in resource-limited nations around the world. These narratives –set in both large cities and small villages across Guatemala, El Salvador, Myanmar and Egypt –are all unique, but bound by the common thread of cancer. Yet during the weeks I spent in the children’ hospitals, oncology clinics, chemotherapy rooms and their family homes, I witnessed their indomitable spirit and unconditional love; it is these defining characteristics that, I believe, will ultimately defeat cancer. ‘How I Live’ is a personal tribute not just to these dignified families struggling against an indiscriminate disease, but also to my own family whom I have lost to cancer and to my loved ones who will continue to fight.

Project Introduction:

HOW I LIVE -  The global burden of children’s cancer falls disproportionately on children living in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).  Annually 200,000 children are diagnosed with cancer, and of these, 80% live in LMICs.  In High Income Countries (HICs), the treatment of pediatric cancer is largely viewed as a success story, with survival rates averaging 80%.  By contrast, in LMICs the survival rate averages just 20%.  However, with concentrated and coordinated efforts, some LMICs have been able to raise their survival rates to those nearly equal to those in HICs.  The photographs in the series “How I Live” are part of a larger documentary photography and film project titled ‘How I Live With Cancer’ which is being created in close partnership with Persistent Productions and the Dana Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer Center and aims to chronicle the healthcare systems — and the patients being treated within the pediatric oncology units — in LMICs that are closing the survival gap around the world.
